compass-metal-sighting-waterproof-hiking
Compass – Waterproof Metal Sighting Compass with Luminous Dial & Magnifier, Folding Military Style Navigation Tool for Hiking, Camping & Map Reading

Batteries die and phones get wet, but a compass always works. This Fellmont Compass is a folding, sighting-style navigation tool with a clear scale and a transparent base plate, so you can take an accurate bearing and read it straight off a map without guesswork. It belongs in every walking rucksack, car kit and survival bag.

The luminous markings stay readable at dusk and in poor light, and the waterproof housing shrugs off rain and river crossings. Folded it measures about 8 x 6 x 3cm and weighs next to nothing, so it slips into a pocket or lid pouch and you forget it is there until the mist comes down and you need it. Learning to take a bearing takes about ten minutes, and it is a skill that stays with you for life, long after the battery in your phone has run flat on a hill.

It is a genuinely useful tool for hiking, hillwalking, camping, orienteering, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and geocaching, and a great way to teach children real navigation rather than following a screen. Keep it away from phones, speakers and other magnets, which can affect the needle, and practise with a paper map before you rely on it.
