Product care
Keep it away from phones, speakers, magnetic clasps and anything else magnetic, which pulls the needle off and can permanently weaken it. Store it flat and away from heat. Check the needle swings freely and settles before you rely on it - a sticking needle means it has been near a magnet. Practise taking and walking a bearing with a paper map before you need it in bad weather. Rinse salt water off and dry it after coastal use.
Full details

Batteries die and phones get wet, but a compass always works. This Fellmont Compass is a folding, sighting-style navigation tool with a clear scale and a transparent base plate, so you can take an accurate bearing and read it straight off a map without guesswork. It belongs in every walking rucksack, car kit and survival bag.

The luminous markings stay readable at dusk and in poor light, and the waterproof housing shrugs off rain and river crossings. Folded it measures about 8 x 6 x 3cm and weighs next to nothing, so it slips into a pocket or lid pouch and you forget it is there until the mist comes down and you need it. Learning to take a bearing takes about ten minutes, and it is a skill that stays with you for life, long after the battery in your phone has run flat on a hill.

It is a genuinely useful tool for hiking, hillwalking, camping, orienteering, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and geocaching, and a great way to teach children real navigation rather than following a screen. Keep it away from phones, speakers and other magnets, which can affect the needle, and practise with a paper map before you rely on it. Order your Fellmont Outdoors compass today.

Why carry one

Batteries die. Magnetism does not.

Phone navigation is excellent right up to the moment the **battery goes flat, the screen gets wet, or the signal disappears in a valley** — and those three things happen most often in exactly the conditions where you need to know where you are. A compass has **nothing to fail**, weighs nothing, and works in the dark and the rain.

  • **No battery, no signal, nothing to charge**
  • **Works wet, cold and in the dark**
  • **Rucksack, car kit and survival bag**

Taking a bearing

A real tool, not an ornament.

The **sighting design** lets you aim at a distant feature and read an accurate bearing, and the **transparent base plate with a scale** sits on a map so you can transfer that bearing without guesswork. **Luminous markings** keep it readable as the light goes. Learning to use it properly takes about ten minutes and stays with you for life.

  • **Sighting line** for accurate bearings to a feature
  • **Transparent base plate** with scale for map work
  • **Luminous dial** for dusk and poor light

Build

Folds away, shrugs off weather.

Folded it is about **8 x 6 x 3cm** and weighs next to nothing, so it goes in a **lid pouch or a jacket pocket** and you forget it until the mist comes down. The **waterproof housing** copes with rain and river crossings. It is also the best way to teach a child **real navigation** rather than following a blue dot.

  • **8 x 6 x 3cm folded**, 16.6 x 5.7 x 1.9cm open
  • **Waterproof housing**
  • **Hiking, orienteering, Duke of Edinburgh, geocaching**

The build quality is decent, but... the compass doesn't work. it's totally inaccurate. i ordered another, way smaller cheap keychain compass and it's way more reliable.

    Never buy THIS.

THIS will never help you with navigation.

    Cheap plastic toy for children.

There's no metal there - it's cheap plastic.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a phone with GPS. Why would I carry this?
Because the phone is the thing that fails. Cold flattens batteries fast, rain makes touchscreens unusable, and a valley or a dense wood kills signal. A compass and a paper map keep working in all three. Most mountain rescue advice is to carry both, and to know how to use the one without a battery.
Do I need to know how to use it?
Yes, and that is the honest answer. A compass you cannot use is dead weight. Taking a bearing from a map and walking it takes about ten minutes to learn - there are good free guides from Ordnance Survey and mountaineering bodies. Practise on a familiar walk, not in the mist.
What is the sighting part for?
It lets you aim the compass at a distant feature - a summit, a church tower, a bend in a river - and read the exact bearing to it. That is how you work out where you are from two known features, and it is far more accurate than eyeballing the dial.
Will it work anywhere in the world?
Compasses are balanced for a magnetic zone, and the supplier does not state which one this is. For UK and European use it will be fine. If you are heading to the southern hemisphere, check the needle still sits level rather than dipping and dragging.
Is it accurate enough to rely on?
For walking navigation, yes - this style of sighting compass is the standard tool. Accuracy depends far more on technique and on keeping metal and magnets away from it than on the instrument. Remember to account for magnetic variation when working from a map.
Can children use it?
It is a good way to teach navigation, and far more engaging than a screen. There are no batteries and nothing to break. Teach them to keep it away from phones, which is the single thing most likely to ruin a compass.

A cool compass. I still need to figure out how all those numerous notches and markings work. The body is plastic, although for some reason it says on the box that it's metal.

This is the second time I've ordered the same item to give to school children as a gift. The item arrived quickly, but some of the boxes containing the compasses were damaged, and since it's a gift item, I would prefer a more sturdy single package rather than having them individually placed in a plastic bag and shipped.

Wasn't what i expected i expected a better product not wanting to work is a piece of plastic i thought it was going to be metal but thanks anyway
