One slot cannot do two jobs. The **coarser stage** takes a genuinely dull edge back to shape; the **finer stage** smooths and polishes what the coarse one left behind. Run a blade through both, in that order, and a knife that was tearing tomatoes goes back to slicing them.

It would be nice if my husband could buy a whetstone and sharpen the knife for me, but my husband is too busy drinking to do that. My kind-hearted wife bought one at a reasonable price and put the blade in the second or third slot, then sharpened it by moving it back and forth a few times. She did it for me and it sharpened really well; it's scary how well it works.
