Product care
Practise with it on a sunny day before you ever need it - aiming a flash is a skill, and five minutes in a garden is enough to learn it. Keep it in a sleeve or a kit pocket so the reflective face does not get scratched. Check it is still in your kit at the start of each season; small items migrate. Remember it only works in daylight. Carry a whistle and a torch so you are covered at night and in poor visibility. Do not use it to reflect sunlight at drivers, pilots or anyone else except in a genuine emergency.
Full details

A signal mirror is one of the lightest pieces of rescue equipment you can carry and one of the few that works with no battery, no signal and no moving parts. The reflective face throws a bright flash of sunlight that can be seen at considerable distance by aircraft, boats or search parties, and the central aiming aperture lets you place that flash on a target rather than sweeping it hopefully across the horizon.

Using it is straightforward: hold the mirror near your face, sight the target through the hole, and tilt until the bright spot of reflected light settles on it. Repeated flashes read as a deliberate signal rather than a glint off water. It weighs almost nothing, slips into a first aid kit, map pocket or survival tin, and sits there indefinitely without maintenance. Two shapes are available, rectangular and square.

Worth carrying on hill walks, multi day treks, sailing and kayaking trips, and in a vehicle emergency kit. It is a daylight tool and needs sun or strong ambient light to work, so pair it with a whistle and a torch so you are covered in poor visibility and after dark. Fellmont Outdoors treats signalling gear as basic trip insurance: tiny, cheap, and occasionally the thing that shortens a search by hours.

Why a mirror

It cannot run out.

Every other way of being found depends on something that fails: a **phone battery, a radio signal, a torch**. A mirror has **nothing to go flat and nothing to break**, which is why it still appears in aviation and marine survival kits decades after better technology existed. It weighs almost nothing and can **sit in a kit for years** without maintenance.

  • **No battery, no signal, no moving parts**
  • **Sits in a kit indefinitely** without maintenance
  • **Aircraft, boats and search parties** at distance

Aiming it

The hole is the important part.

Waving a mirror about is almost useless; **placing the flash on a target** is what gets you found. Hold the mirror **near your face, sight the target through the central aperture, and tilt until the bright spot settles on it**. Repeated flashes read as **a deliberate signal rather than a glint off water**, which is the distinction that matters to a search crew.

  • **Sight through the aperture** and tilt onto the target
  • **Repeat the flashes** so it reads as deliberate
  • **Rectangular or square** shape options

Where it fits

One of three, not one of one.

A mirror is a **daylight tool** — it needs sun or strong ambient light to do anything at all. That is not a flaw, it is a limit, and the answer is to **carry a whistle and a torch alongside it** so you are covered in **poor visibility and after dark** too. Together they cost almost nothing and weigh almost nothing.

  • **Hill walks, multi-day treks, sailing and kayaking**
  • **Vehicle emergency kits**
  • **Pair it with a whistle and a torch**

Frequently Asked Questions

How far away can a flash be seen?
No range figure is published, and any number would be misleading - it depends on how strong the sun is, how clear the air is, the angle, and above all whether anyone happens to be looking in your direction. What is reliable is that a deliberate, repeated flash is visible far beyond shouting or whistle range in good light.
How do I actually aim it?
Hold the mirror close to your face and sight your target - an aircraft, a boat, a distant group - through the central hole. You will see a bright spot of reflected light on your own face or hand; tilt the mirror until that spot lines up with the target through the aperture. Practise it in a garden on a sunny day; it takes about five minutes to learn.
Does it work on a cloudy day?
Poorly, and in heavy overcast not at all. It is a daylight tool that needs sun or strong ambient light. That is exactly why it should be one of three signalling items rather than your only one - a whistle works in fog and a torch works at night.
Is it just a mirror?
The reflective face is the easy part; the aiming aperture is what makes it a signal mirror rather than a shaving mirror. Without a way of placing the flash accurately you are sweeping light hopefully across a horizon, which rarely works.
Should I carry one even on short walks?
It weighs almost nothing and costs very little, which is the whole argument. The people who need signalling kit are rarely the ones who planned a serious expedition - they are the ones who went out for three hours and turned an ankle.
Can I use my phone screen instead?
In a pinch, a phone screen or any shiny surface reflects light, and people have been found that way. It is much harder to aim without an aperture, and your phone is also the thing you want to keep charged for a 999 call. A dedicated mirror costs less than a coffee.
